Floor and Warehouse Marking Stencils: Sizing and Layout
A floor marking stencil is a large Mylar sheet with the shape cut out, laid flat and sprayed or rolled through. Order it at the size of the finished mark plus an overspray border, check the surface is flat enough for the sheet to sit flush, and split anything wider than 1,400 mm into registered panels. That covers most of what goes wrong on a floor job.
Start with the finished size, then add the border
Measure the mark you want on the ground: the bay, the symbol, the lettering or the logo. The stencil is that shape surrounded by a margin of solid sheet, the overspray margin, which catches spray and keeps paint off the surrounding surface. On our large stencils the border is 50 mm as standard, and wider borders are available on request for spray gun work. If you are working with a spray gun rather than a roller, ask for the wider border, because overspray travels further than roller over-run.
Measure the floor properly too, including obstructions such as drains, columns, power points and expansion joints. A stencil that is perfect on paper but crosses a joint will not sit flush there.
Width, length and panels
We cut large stencils from 1,400 mm wide Mylar rolls on a bed that takes the full width, with a pass-through for continuous cutting. The maximum size is 1,400 mm wide and continuous in length, so the practical limit on length is what you can handle on site and what can be shipped, not what the machine can cut. A long run of line work or lettering can therefore be a single sheet.
Anything wider than 1,400 mm is tiled across several sheets. Registration marks are cut into each panel so the panels line up on the floor, and you lay them in sequence rather than judging the alignment by eye. If the same design is going to several sites, we can supply duplicate sets so more than one location can be painted at the same time.
Bridges, counters and islands in floor lettering
Lettering and symbols behave on a floor exactly as they do on a small stencil. The counter of an O, A, B or 8 is an island: it has no connection to the sheet and would fall out unless it is held by a bridge. For floor marking, bridges are usually the right call because the stencil is lifted and relaid many times. The bridge leaves a thin gap in the painted letter, and on large lettering that gap reads as a deliberate stencil cut. If the job calls for unbroken letters, the alternative is a layered set, with the islands cut on a second sheet that is registered over the first.
Multi-colour artwork is handled the same way: one registered plate per colour. Each plate is cut from the same artwork, so the colours stay in register from one pass to the next.
Material and reuse
The large stencils are cut from 14mil (0.35 mm) commercial Mylar, which is strong, flexible and reusable. A finer 7.5mil (0.19 mm) sheet is available where fine detail matters more than durability. With proper cleaning and flat storage a stencil can be applied dozens to hundreds of times, which is why a marked-out warehouse layout is a sensible use for one: the same sheet marks every repeat of the bay or symbol.
Wipe it clean before the paint cures hard, and store it flat or rolled loosely. Creases are the usual cause of a stencil that stops sealing at the edges.
Check the surface before you order
The stencil only controls bleed if the sheet sits against the surface. Smooth sealed concrete and bitumen suit it well. Textured surfaces, such as broom-finished or rough concrete, will not let any stencil sit completely flush, which can allow paint to bleed under the edge. If your surface is rough, talk to us before ordering rather than after the first pass.
How the order runs
Enter your own dimensions and upload your artwork. Every order receives a digital proof within 1 to 2 business days, and nothing is cut until you approve it. Large stencils are dispatched within 2 business days of approval, tracked, with free shipping Australia-wide on orders of A$99 or more. For an unusual size, surface or panel count, use the quote form on our website; quotes are free.
You can order a floor or warehouse marking stencil from the large stencils collection, or go straight to the Large Custom Stencils product page. For wall work, our guide to large wall and mural stencils covers the planning in more detail, and why stencils need bridges explains where the bridges go.
