Custom Stencils FAQ
All materials have different properties and size limitations leading them to excel in different areas:
Mylar: allrounder, best for small durable stencils, clean lines and flexible (great for curved surfaces), high level of reusability.
Flexible Translucent Acrylic: great for medium to large stencils, straight clean edges with limited flexibility, excellent as a stencil but also as part of a design.
Polypropylene: flexible and durable, flagship material for stencilling in industrial areas, excellent for XLarge stencils with single stencils able to be up to 1400mm wide by 2200mm long.
Vinyl: one time use stencil, great for highly intricate details, enables the use of no bridges which means you get an exact transfer.
Plywood: ridged stencil that can be used for painting or as a sign itself.
MDF: ridged stencil that can be used for painting or as a sign itself.
Creating a stencil from a logo or image involves a process that simplifies the design into clear, solid sections that can be easily cut out and used for painting, drawing, or spraying.
Here’s our step-by-step workflow of how our we typically convert a logo or image into a stencil-friendly format:
1. The Image/logo: The first step is choosing an image or logo that can be effectively turned into a stencil. Simple designs with clear, bold lines and minimal fine details work best.
2. Image Editing Software: We use image editing software like Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. These programs help in manipulating the image to enhance its stencil viability.
3. Simplify the Design: The image is simplified by reducing it to its basic elements. This involves removing any small or intricate details that won’t translate well into a stencil. The goal is to create larger, connected areas that can be easily cut out.
4. Increase Contrast: We adjust the contrast to create a clear distinction between the parts that will be cut out and the parts that will remain. This typically involves converting the image to black and white, where black represents the areas to keep and white represents the areas to cut out.
5. Create Bridges: In stencil art, 'bridges' are small sections of material left to hold the design together. Without bridges, parts of the design might fall out or become disconnected. Designers strategically place these bridges to maintain the integrity of the design while keeping its functionality as a stencil.
6. Final Adjustments: Further tweaks and adjustments are made to ensure the image is as clear and functional as possible. This might include smoothing out edges, adjusting the thickness of the lines, and ensuring that all elements are connected properly to support the stencil’s structure.
7. Convert to Vector Format: For precision in cutting, we will convert the image into a vector format. Vector files are scalable and allow for clean, sharp lines that are ideal for stencil creation.
8. Test Cut: Finally, a test stencil is often produced to check the design’s practical application. This allows us to see if any additional adjustments are needed before the final version is used.
The outcome is a durable, reusable stencil that maintains the essence of the original logo or image, ready for use in various applications.
